Weathering steel products
BlueScope Distribution distributes a range of weathering steel plate products, typically used in non-marine and non-industrial applications. These weathering grade steel products have enhanced weather resistance compared to traditional steel plate and are widely recognised for their aesthetic appeal.
Weathering steel products are distinctive and easily recognised by the patina that develops through oxidisation of the protective surface layer of the steel through exposure to the elements.
The patina is the result of the complex protective oxide layer that forms on the steel plate’s surface. It is this oxide layer that produces a distinctive appearance and contributes to the material’s enhanced weather resistance capabilities compared to standard steels. If the protective oxide layer is damaged, the process of oxidation may recommence in that area until the protective layer is reformed.
The improved corrosion performance may lead to improved service life and can provide a cost advantage over other materials.
