Starting as a Sales Coordinator
Matt Maw began his career at BlueScope Distribution in 2007 as a Sales Coordinator in Albury. His initial aspiration was to learn as much as possible about the steel industry, understand customer needs, and assist in branch growth while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. “I’m very happy with the journey thus far,” he reflects, noting the significant growth of the Albury site and its customer base.
Role Progression
Over the years, Matt progressed from Sales Coordinator to Customer Service Supervisor, and eventually to Branch Manager of the Albury BlueScope Distribution branch. He also took on a secondment as the Sydney & Albury Customer Service Supervisor, which provided valuable insights into different parts of the business. “This opportunity allowed me to report directly to the State Manager and become part of the NSW Lead Team,” he explains.
Supportive environment
Matt attributes his success to the excellent support from colleagues, managers, and customers. “Without the hard work and dedication of all the teams involved within BSD, the branch and I wouldn’t be where we are today,” he says.
Embracing technology
One of the biggest changes Matt has observed is the evolution of technology within the business. Over the years, the integration of advanced technology, like our customer management tool, has transformed the way the company operates. These technological advancements have enabled faster action for both teams and customers.
Professional development and achievements
Matt has completed a Diploma in Management and various leadership and coaching courses. He emphasises the importance of mentoring, recalling advice from a wise manager: “Try to learn one good thing from each colleague or manager you meet and add it to your toolkit.” This approach has been invaluable in his career.
One of Matt’s proudest achievements is the successful implementation of the State-Based NSW Customer Service Team, the first of its kind in the business. He is also proud of seeing past employees succeed, with five in the NSW State being promoted to more senior roles.
Looking ahead
For now, Matt is happy in his role as Branch Manager at Albury and enjoys working with his great team. However, he envisions a future in a warmer climate near the ocean once his kids have grown up.
